In a genre that's best known for its focus on plot, Karin Slaughter creates realistic and flawed characters who struggle to do what's right, while never skimping on the suspense. In Pretty Girls, two sisters who haven't spoken in years are suddenly reunited after the husband of Claire is murdered.
It seems wrong to say that these dark thrillers from Karin Slaughter (she's not one to shy away from violence) make me happy. As terrifying as the mystery is as it unfolds, however, it's entertaining. It's enough to keep you reading to find out just what happened to the Lydia and Claire's sister.
As with any well-written thriller, there's guaranteed to be a tension-filled twist that will have you questioning how the characters are going to come out of it alive, and that's exactly what Karin Slaughter does with Pretty Girls. Claire and Lydia fight to put the years apart behind them as they struggle to figure out what the F is going on.
I don't want to say more (it seems that talking about specific things will give away the fun of uncovering it yourself), but Pretty Girls is definitely a book that any dark and gritty thriller fan will want to read.
