Vietnam and politics are used as a framework to portray the heroin's struggle to become self-actualized, coming out from under the shadow of her brother. Written in the tradition of a carefully detailed plot, drawn out sparingly in a sensitive, internal monologue, the book expresses a sense of destiny that many people believe they have and who would enjoy reading about someone who begins to experience its fulfillment.
