So understanding that his path is set the man bestows upon his betrothed the longed for engagement ring and gives the other a coin of Edward VII with a Diamond, an Amethyst, and a Pearl. What follows includes a mysterious man, a retired detective, an apparent crime of passion, an confusion of identities, a total muddle of a mess, all brought clear in the end. This book was part of the work of the man that inspired Doyle to create Holmes.
