In February of 1921, nine years after Scott's ill-fated expedition, two other men freeze to death in the Antarctic. Almost half a century later their bodies are found, along with a peculiar diary written by one of them which does singularly little to explain what they were doing there. A young lawyer is asked to unravel this puzzle, which takes the reader through a mosaic of intertwined tales that stretch from Canada to the Himalayas, from the Middle Ages till the 1920s, and end up looming ominously into the present.
