Ted is an old man remembering his life from the pages of his old diaries, while Ryan is writing a letter to his mother that recalls his life so far. Their seemingly unrelated and very different stories begin to unravel, with both being irreversibly changed by the appearance and disappearance of a mysterious girl. Ted's kindly patience and Ryan's untameable wildness eventually send them down very different paths as their loss gradually engulfs them, until they are finally able to make their peace.
