Daybreak In Alabama is the story of Ruth, a mulatto lesbian house slave from Kentucky who, in 1854, is sold south to Alabama when her owner discovers her in flagrante delicto with his wife. Ruth is sold to Leland Roberts, a former New York banker who acquired his plantation, near Huntsville, when its previous owner went bankrupt. Ruth soon makes a favourable impression on Master Roberts, who gives her greater responsibilities on the plantation, fostering resentment among the other slaves. In the course of resolving this friction, she comes to command the respect of the others, and meets Orpah, a black lesbian field slave. In spring, the couple decide to run away to Canada. Their flight involves mayhem, murder and ultimate tragedy.
