Mike is a voracious reader and has a variety of interests. Some of them include photography, drone flying, collecting kaleidoscopes (and more), and also performing as an amateur and sometimes professional magician. He earned money throughout his college years by working for the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, teaching magic and entertaining at parties and functions. Children and their well-being have been an important focus of his life. He volunteered as a Child Advocate (CASA) for several years, and has entertained as "Santa" at the Kell House Museum in Wichita Falls for well over 30 years.

When Mike was 70, he began volunteering at Hospice with his therapy dog Abby, and touched the hearts of many people with this little friend. When Abby passed, his life was turned upside down. While still grieving, he adopted Mindy. This little Pomeranian dog is not ready to be a therapy dog yet, but she has comforted and eased the pain of Abby's loss.

As of January 2022, Mike goes to work every morning with Mindy, the Pomeranian, who maintains eye contact with him and watches his every move.
