After graduating from high school, Richard Floyd pursued a writing career. Then, at the advanced age of 38, he decided it was time to finish his education, and enrolled as a first-year student at the University of British Columbia. Six years later, he had earned a double major in Sociology and Psychology, and a Master of Arts in Sociology. In 1989, he began teaching at Kwantlen College—now Kwantlen University College. In his 13 years at Kwantlen, Richard has served as department chair twice, as well as working on an assortment of academic and administrative committees. Richard published Success in the Social Sciences, a how-to book dealing with the process of researching and writing undergraduate papers, in 1995. He has also been involved in more than a dozen research projects focusing primarily on issues of marginalization as it affects Canadian seniors and street youth. Richard is the proud dad of four grown children, Sarah and Katie from a previous marriage, and Jennifer and Jessica, daughters of his wife, Verian. He and Verian live in the cozy community of Crescent Beach, south of Vancouver, British Columbia.
