Angela Fanning is a self-taught first generation farmer who built Axe & Root Homestead, a six-acre farm in central New Jersey, USA. Originally a graphic and website designer by trade, she owned and operated her own design firm for over a decade. But though the work was interesting, she wasn't happy meeting deadlines and sitting behind a computer. After the birth of her first child, she realised she wanted to be outdoors, aligning her life with the seasons and with nature. She now grows and preserves her own homegrown produce for her young family, and runs a farm bustling with Clydesdales, geese and ducks for eggs, an apiary with ten beehives, sheep and a small orchard. She taps her trees for maple syrup, creates her own soap and has a vineyard for homemade wine. She shares this love for eco-conscious, self-sufficient living with others through her Instagram account @axeandroothomestead (46k followers), her online homesteading classes, and is a regular contributor to publications such as Countryside Magazine, and Backyard Beekeping and Backyard Poultry Magazines.
