Stephen J. Lavin is professor of geography at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He has designed and produced more than 450 maps in forty-plus books, including the award-winning Atlas of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1983-1996), Escape through the Balkans: The Autobiography of Irene Grunbaum (1996), An Unspeakable Sadness: The Dispossession of the Nebraska Indians (1996), Searching for Saleem: An Afghan Woman's Odyssey (2004), and Atlas of American Politics, 1960-2000 (with J. Clark Archer, Kenneth C. Martis, and Fred M. Shelley for CQ Press, 2002).
