Terry was born in Muncie, IN to Shirley and George Stanley. He was adopted by his grandparents when he was two years old and his last name was changed to Lowery. He was born a twin, but his identical twin brother died at birth. He has one other biological brother and 4 half siblings. He attended South Side High School in Muncie and, when he turned 17, he joined the US Army. He served for four years before receiving an honorable discharge. During his service, he was stationed at Fort Knox, KY where he was with the First Calvary Scouts. He later trained to be a medic. After his discharge from the Army, Terry moved to Fort Wayne, IN where he played in the Rock Hill Band as a drummer. He played with some local country bands as well. He also worked as a truck driver before being wrongly accused of murder.
