Washington-Melchizedek is a Native Black American artist who draws her inspiration for her photography and playwritings from the rich cultural influences of New York City. Born in Harlem, she grew up in Brooklyn and the North Bronx. Many years later, she returned to the Harlem community. In 1977, she first began studying photography at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She graduated from the Art (Photography) program from The City College of New York, CUNY with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Prior to that, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Studio Art from The College of New Rochelle.
