Alicia Castro was born in 1920 in Havana, Cuba and by the age of twelve was playing with her sisters in their band, Anacaona. The band retired in 1989 and Alicia lives with two of her sisters in the Lawton district of Havana. Anacaona: The Amazing Adventures of Cuba's First All-Girl Dance Band was published by Atlantic Books in 2007.
