Garen Ewing is the creator, writer and illustrator of the Adventures of Julius Chancer, a classic adventure series in the tradition of the Franco-Belgian clear line (though with a very British flavour) and the exciting tales of authors such as Jules Verne, H. Rider Haggard and Arthur Conan Doyle. The first in the series, The Rainbow Orchid, won the prestigious Young People’s Comic Award at the 2013 British Comic Awards, was one of The Observer’s `Best Graphic Novels’ of 2012 as well as their `Graphic Novel of the Month’ in May 2012. It was nominated in two categories for a National Comic Award, and has appeared on numerous `best of’ lists.
Garen has been making comics for many years, with recent contributions to The Phoenix and The DFC, illustrating stories by Philip Pullman and Ben Haggarty as well his own material. He contributed to the 2011 award-winning collaborative comic Nelson, and in the early 1990s adapted Shakespeare’s The Tempest into comic form to critical acclaim. He was editor of the comics anthology Cosmorama, which included contributors such as Warren Ellis, Steve Pugh and David Wyatt. Garen has illustrated book covers, posters, magazine and newspaper articles, educational multimedia, advertisements, logos, and even had one of his pieces chosen for a Royal Mail stamp. He has given talks and comics workshops at most of the major literary festivals and continues to do so at schools and libraries, passing on his enthusiasm for the fantastic medium of comics.
