Edward Baugh, 1936-2023, was one of the Caribbean’s major poets and a literary critic whose distinguished career was devoted to West Indian literature – in particular the work of Derek Walcott. He was Professor Emeritus of English at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. A talented actor, he held the post of Public Orator of UWI, Mona for many years. He figured prominently in national, regional, and international literary and academic associations, and adjudicated regional and international literary competitions and prizes such as the Guyana Prize for Literature, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature.
