Paul S. Piper was born and raised in Chicago, and lived for extensive periods in Montana and Hawaii. He received an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana, Missoula, where he studied with Richard Hugo, William Kittredge, Richard Ford, and James Crumley among others. He is currently Special Collections Librarian at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. He has several books of poetry - White, Movement Apparent Song, Now and Then, Winter Apples, and Dogs and Other Poems. He has one book of fiction, South Fork and Other Stories. He has also had the privilege of being included in the anthologies The New Montana Story, America Zen and Tribute to Orpheus. In addition he co-edited the book Father Nature, X-Stories: The Personal Side of Fragile X Syndrome and A Flutter of Birds Passing Through Heaven: a Tribute to Robert Sund.
