In 2002 Sonja joined Centro Leon, a cultural centre in the Dominican Republic dedicated to the development of creativity through research and exhibition of Dominican art and culture highlighting its ties to the Caribbean. She represented the organisation in the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) from 2005 to 2010, holding the Presidency for the last two years.
