Joe Jacobs obtained an undergraduate degree in marine engineering and postgraduate degree in hydrography from the University of Plymouth before joining the Royal Navy and training as a helicopter pilot. After leaving the military he never intended to be a farmer but Joe and his wife 'inadvertantly' started a smallholding, which set them on a journey into the unknown. Joe's engineering background, and his ability to turn his hand to a variety of tasks, has stood him in good stead as a farmer. He now has a pig farm in North Yorkshire where he works full time and writes farming DIY-related books and magazine articles.
