At 14, Richard was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, a progressive and incurable neurological condition. He enjoyed a fulfilling career in Local Government working in Equalities, until his unexpected retirement in 2012. Since then, he has had a long-standing association with the charity that represents people with his condition, Ataxia UK, and undertaken a wide variety of volunteering roles. In 2021 he was awarded an MBE for services to disability and to his community. He lives with his family in Oxfordshire.
