Alfred D�blin, born in Stettin in 1878. For nearly three decades (until exiled in 1933) he pursued a double career as doctor and writer. His first epic novel (The Three Leaps of Wang Lun) appeared in 1916. His greatest success was Berlin Alexanderplatz published in 1929. In 1933 D�blin emigrated to France, and in 1940 escaped the German invasion to spend the war years in Los Angeles. In 1945 he moved back to Germany. He died on June 26, 1957.
