Frances Lucas discovered her passion for young adult novels through her students, establishing an after-school book club and free little library in her classroom. After reading numerous fantasy and science fiction stories, she developed an interest in YA mysteries upon reading One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus. Enjoying the first person, present tense, and alternating points of view, she thought why not write an LGBTQ+ YA mystery for readers like herself? Thus, Can I Trust Her? was born.

She taught animation, technology, and filmmaking in Anchorage Alaska for many years and cofounded the Black Bear Film Festival for middle and high school students in 2012. She now lives in Southern Colorado with her wife and dogs and spends her days writing, reading, and exploring Colorado's many small mountain towns.
