My wife, Norah, and I were brought up in Porthcawl, a seaside town near the site of the wreck that dominates this book. I spent 40 years in the shipping business in Cardiff and London and obtained first hand knowledge of the straightforward and not so straightforward aspects of shipping. We retired to Norfolk in 1999.
