An English novelist and daughter of feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Shelley's most famous work, Frankenstein, was born out of a challenge by Lord Byron during a vacation in Geneva, where Shelley was accompanied by Lord Byron, John Polidori and Percy Shelley. Byron challenged they "each write a ghost story." Of the stories created, Shelley's Frankenstein far surpassed all the others in terms of notoriety. Mary Shelley has been credited with creating the science fiction genre and is one of the most well known female authors of her time. Her works have inspired countless books, movies, and plays and continue to captivate the minds of readers worldwide.
