S.E. Hinton was born in Oklahoma, where she still lives with her husband and son. She began writing The Outsiders as a 15 year old high school student as she was unsatisfied with the literature that was being written for young adults.
Hinton has won numerous awards for her writing and has been inducted into the Oklahoma Writers Hall of Fame. Several of her works have been adapted into film.
