Michael H.C. Baker is the author of some 60 books on places, people and transport. He first travelled the line as a babe in arms to his mother’s family in Shropshire, alighting from the GWR train at Shrewsbury to take the short journey to Hadnall in an LMS one in 1937. He was, believe it or not, instantly hooked and still finds this particular railway journey, as fascinating as ever.
