Goth Moth is an adorable illustrated book in rhyming verse for the youngest kids by Kai Lüftner. Due out 3rd Sept 2024 from North South, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
The art is by Wiebke Rauers and is so whimsically appealing. The characters are diverse cute monsterish spiders, beetles, and other bugs and have different shapes and colors which are mirrored in the text. The illustrations throughout are cute, colorful, and full of small details which invite readers to spend a little more time looking at the pictures and thinking about the text. The story has simple thought provoking takeaways about coming out of our shells, following our dreams, and even being in the limelight sometimes.
The text is very simple and should be accessible to even the youngest readers. The translation work by Tim Mohr is seamless and the scansion of the rhyming text flows very well in English.
It's a valuable little book on several levels and will provide opportunities with a teacher/facilitator/parent/babysitter to find and identify and learn about emotions and how we can enjoy our talents and follow dreams.
Four and a half stars. It would be a nice choice for school or public library acquisition, gift giving, and home use.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
