One of the rules of girl code is never date your friend's ex. The story hidden between the pages of Lora's latest novel centers around this theme. The story intrigued me from the very first page, making me curious to learn if Mila and Ali's got their HEA and if the villain received their just desserts.
Maddie and Mila were friends and co-workers vying for the same position. Maddie was also engaged to Alis. However, what most people didn't know was Maddie led a double life. A life that place her in the cross hairs of a killer. Unfortunately for Mila her desire to cover for Maddie placed her in a position to not only break girl code but also to be on the killer's radar. As a result her world got turned on its head, with the media and bloggers vilifying her at every opportunity.
I loved the efforts Alis made to protect her. Despite the cloud under which their relationship developed their feelings for each other could not be denied. Their romance faced many challenges, but their love for each other proved to be stronger.
The mystery surrounding Maddie's murder and Mila's stalker had me on the edge of my seat. Initially I couldn't figure out the identity of the perp, however has the many scenes began to unfold it became clear. Now although the villain's identify came to light, the story left me with questions concerning a particular individual.
Characters from the previous books in the series made an appearance. It was great to catch up with them. One of the biggest highlights for me was to see Alis standing up to his father who made every attempt to control his life.
When You Break Girl Code delivered a beautiful story of resilience and love. It demonstrates the poor treatment women receive in comparison to men when certain indiscretions come to light. Although both culpable, Mila's reputation suffered and Alis came out squeaky clean. Overall, an entertaining read and one which fans of Contemporary Romance served up with suspense will enjoy.
