Quirky Cat
Book Summary:
Alison has never had the best relationship with her mother. However, while her brother was able to cut ties with the family, Alison never felt right completely walking away from her family. This feeling grows when Alison learns that her mother is ill – terminally so.
When Mavis is diagnosed with cancer, Alison and her husband agree to take her into their own. They agree, despite the concerns about her care – and their concerns for how Mavis will treat their children. Unfortunately, they're about to learn what happens when you let evil inside.
My Review:
First, I just want to say that I had a case of "pretty book cover!" when I picked My Darling Girl for one of my BOTM choices. But really, can you blame me? It's so pretty! Ironically, this cover both does and doesn't hint at what is happening between this book's covers.
My Darling Girl is a dark psychological thriller with surprisingly horror elements. There's also a strong undertone of family drama. It's also probably not the book for everyone, as it does delve into family abuse.
This book is split into a couple different perspectives. Most of it focuses on Alison's take on the story/world, but we get a glimpse into the past every now and then. Through these glimpses, we learn what really happened to Mavis – and the danger she presents to Alison's family because of it.
Overall, I wouldn't say that My Darling Girl was my favorite. It's an interesting concept, but it is a bit heavy-handed. Still, I'm happy that I took the time to read it, and I will be keeping an eye on what Jennifer McMahon writes next.
