Well-to-do Black families and their personal dramas set against the burgeoning social change of Black suffrage and the fight against Jim Crow - what's not to love? The yearning of young adults for love, for wanting something different than what your parents want for you, for the desire to be an agent for change, for wanting to become something more than what you came from are all universal and timeless. Oliva, Helen, Ruby, and Amy-Rose's intertwined stories pull in the reader right away, providing a glimpse into a part of US history that isn't very well known. That said, it isn't a textbook read at all - it's a fun read, and I can't wait for the next title in the series. hope this is the first in a series, not just a duology, as I'm pretty sure there is lots to explore in the lives of these characters and this specific, Black-focused slice of of American history.
