When I first cracked this one open, it was quite a slow, almost whimsical vibe going on, almost like a fairytale, a screaming princess in a forest with a jaunty travelling gentleman out foraging, coming to her aid, when all of a sudden you get a beast and torn off arms. Heck yes.
I'm instantly sold at this point.
The story revolves around a princess desperate to escape her arranged marriage to a foreign prince, out of fear, runs away and the jaunty traveler merchant nee nobleman, who saves her and somehow ends up back in the life he escaped out of loyalty to his royal company.
The story then takes on twisty, dark paths and I loveeeee it. The thought of eating raw chicken made me do a little vommy noise, but that's just because what kind of freaky humans eat raw chicken, and I mean like raw just had it's eyes open chicken, not packaged on a fridge shelf in Tesco ready to cook raw chicken.
I absolutely loved all the twists and turns mendonça threw at us with this tale, I never expected any of them at all! Kept me on my toes the entire time.
I absolutely loved the characters, I was hugely worried when the FMC was deaded. I was like this doesn't happen. What'd you do man!
The magic elements in this story seem to be confined to some magic god stones, and a select few populace of people, well those that are known with magic anyway, I was a bit confused about the depth/content of magic as there wasn't any real magic wielders in the book. Perhaps book 2?
I'd quite like to see the magic develop even more into the rest of the series, it feels like it will be dark and twisty, I like that.
This was a fantasy/mystery/adventure. I really liked the whole world developed and after reading book 2's sneak peek, I'm very excited to dive right in. It looks even more intense and thrilling than book 1!
Will I recommend? Definitely
Will I read the entire series? Hell yes.
4* very captivated stars from me!
