I audio read A promised Land so I could have the full Obama experience and I really don't regret. As advertised, the memoirs are amazingly written and read, learning so much about geopolitics, US politics and the ignored signed that led to the election of Trump. And buckle up, because it's a very long read! But I'm so excited to read the second part of the memoirs.
Initial thoughts: As expected, Barack Obama was an excellent narrator. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audiobook and found comfort even just listening to the voice. In terms of the memoir itself, A Promised Land was really dense. I appreciated the depth and detail Obama chose to include, expanding the initially planned book into a two-volume memoir.
I liked that this memoir was accessible even to readers not entirely familiar with US politics and law. The writing flowed and was simple enough to understand. The challenge lay in making sense of how all these pieces fit together. I felt that I gained a lot of insight about Obama's ethics and beliefs, and his approach to making decisions. In terms of how recent history panned out, I found this to be valuable resource too.
Although, to truly glean the nuance, I think one read isn't enough. I was prepared for that to be the case though even before going in. To gain an overview, the audiobook is perfect. If you want to properly study the details, you'd need to pick up a printed or ebook copy to highlight and/or annotate.
