I really appreciated how Emmet/Cort and Hannah weren’t so gorgeous that they couldn’t help falling in love with each other. Cort actually didn’t think Hannah was attractive when they first met. Once he began to appreciate her, he found her to be beautiful. Kudos to the author for that!
It was fun to see Hannah forced into a role so different from what one would expect of a woman at that time. Though the bounty she sought for capturing Emmet was not money but the return of a stolen horse, she was a bounty hunter nonetheless. She had to figure out how to do so many things to obey her father’s demands. My heart went out to her as more and more of her life with her dad was revealed.
I did have mixed feelings about Cort. He was a great guy in so many ways, and yet he wasn’t. There was no evidence that he repented of stealing the horse. He was sorry, but he seemed to justify what he did a little too much. He also thought it was not wrong to run a gambling tent.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Though there were hints that the stories of a few other characters have been told in other stories in the series, they are clearly intended to stand alone.
