Note: This review covers all 4 installments.
I have to say that I don't usually like the 'stories by installment' type of books. However, the world building in this series is amazing. I love the detail and thought the author put into both the world Neil and the others live in, as well as the creatures that make up the world.
Neil is a scholarship student at a school where most students are what is called the 'Elite.' These are the wealthy and or extremely smart. At age 18, all children must be tested to find out if they have a creature inheritance, and if so, what that inheritance is. Neil finds out he is a Dragel. Which is a kind of human/dragon hybrid long thought extinct. They are also considered dark creatures, and he is afraid that anyone finding this out will mean a death sentence for him. His magic acts up and shorts out the testing chamber before anyone realizes what he is. And this is the start of the adventure.
Not only is the world and creatures therein, highly detailed and fascinating to read about. The characters you meet are fully fleshed out. Each one has different quirks, and feels like a real person. I love this story so much, and cannot wait for the next part to come out! My only wish is that it was a single book so I wouldn't have to flip between 'installments' to read it all.
One thing that may bother some, is that Dragels are polyamorous. They form Circles consisting of no less than 3 (Alpha, Beta, and Submissive) and the largest on record was a Circle of 27, with 17 children. So if that kind of thing bothers you, you may not like this book.
For everyone else, I would highly recommend this series.
