Helen Dunmore's first book, The Apple Fall, was widely praised for celebrating the lives of women with 'a quiet feminist awareness' (Judith Kazantzis, City Limits). Her poems were 'lucid', 'vital' and 'sensuous'. Those qualities are just as strong in The Sea Skater, but Helen Dunmore's new poems are darker and more pwoerful. They are often mysterious, with disturbing undertones, shading from quiet to unquiet, from sensuous to sinister. The Sea Skater was her second collection, published in 1986.
