In this work, MacCabe argues that English has never satisfactorily produced a pedagogy or a curriculum which would equip students to deal with their cultural present as well as their cultural past. Through a consideration of the history of English as language, as literature and as discipline, MacCabe offers a model for the teaching of English which embraces both the literary tradition and the new media.
