The mother, Bernarda Alba happens to be sixty years old. She lives in a house in Andalusia with her five daughters named Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio, and Adela.
La Poncia, the housekeeper, and Maria Josefa, Bernarda's mother, also live in that house with them.
The playwright has deliberately excluded male character from the action. Owing to this technique, the high level of sexual tension prevails throughout the play.
