The memoir revolves around the author, Jeannette Walls, and her family. The author describes that her family had constant scarcity of money. The family kept on moving frequently and continued to try to resettle.
It is quite obvious that it is a dysfunctional family, but the author does not condemn either of the parents. At several places in the memoir there is obvious touch of humor with a light spirited tone.
