I have to admit, I read Harry Potter for the first time last summer. But I was hooked from page 1. JK Rowling created such an impressive and magical world, her stories touch you. So, The Cursed Child has quite big shoes to step into. Before I had a chance to read the book, there was plenty of time to check out reviews. There are some very mixed feelings out there, from loved it to super awful - the whole spectrum is covered. So I was even more excited (and a little nervous) about this one!
First of all, let me explain something: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is intended to be a play, therefore the "book" is not what you would traditionally imagine it be. It is simply the script for the play, containing nothing but a few stage directions and dialogue.
If reading that kind of stuff is not something you are used to, it can be pretty hard to get into as it is very different from a regular book. That might be a reason some people disliked the "book".
Apart from that, I have to say that JK Rowling created an interesting story that's both heart-warming and heart-breaking. It's hell of a ride through time with some unexpected plot twists. Of course we also meet some old friends. You know, I immediately thought Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would make for an amazing film but then my heart to broke over the fact that Alan Rickman isn't there to play Snape :'-(

So, I don't want to add any spoilers, therefore this review is a little short.
There is one thing you should bear in mind with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: It's not a regular book, it's a script to a play. If you get yourself acquainted with that kind of style, I am certain you will love it!

To my surprise, I loved the format but the storyline, not so much. It lacked engagement, enchantment and the magic that is Harry Potter. I loved the friendship between Albus and Scorpius, so lovely and gentle. I do hope the script is more entertaining on the stage.

It took me a bit to get used to the screenplay format, but once I did I really enjoyed being back in the Wizarding world! Would really like to see the play.

Well I finished this. I wish I could say I liked it but I really didn't. The story itself is a great idea but the writing makes it feel like badly written fan fiction. Maybe the actual stage production would make it better but I doubt I'll ever get a chance to see it performed.

So far (and I'm not really too far into this) I have to say I'm not overly impressed. The play script format is not a problem. What I'm not liking is the story line and the actual writing.
Things that might be important are glossed over (Draco Malfoy's wife for instance) and I'm not too sure how some of the staging will work (Polyjuice potion?).
I hope this gets better as I go on.

It's not that it was that bad, but it was sooo unnecessary and full of convenient (and totally unbelievable) plot devices! The first 2 parts were ok, I liked Scorpius (Albus not so much), but the other 2 were just so messy and uninteresting.
Harry felt forced, I never liked Ron but this older version is worse, Hermione seemed another person and Draco (my fav character when I was younger) was just not Draco at all. Am I insane? Am I the only one who remembers these characters in a totally different way?
Lastly, I am a sci-fi geek and one thing that I really, REALLY, hate when time travel is involved is paradoxes (tho my favorite movie of all time is Back to the future, which, lets be honest, is full of them). Here paradoxes are EVERYWHERE and they made me so mad!!
The only thing that saved this book from a 1 star rating is the feelings that I got while reading it, but anything that has the word "Harry Potter" in it manages to do that, so this book is not special at all.
