I love it when the tough guy goes mushy gushy…
Victoria Paige is a bloody legend when it comes to writing fast-paced, exciting and spine-tingling romance. I spend most of my time convinced that Ms Paige is a CIA agent who likes to write romance in her spare time. She always manages to drag me into a world where there are guns blazing, and I must read each page quickly to work out who are my enemies or allies.
The Princess and the Mercenary was BLOODY AWESOME!!!
I loved the characters, was completely absorbed in the storyline and thought the love story was very sexy, at times funny and always full of heart.
I’ve never really known much about aid missions to war-torn countries. In The Princess and the Mercenary we get to see the highs and lows of what aid workers deal with daily. The preparations are filled with red tape and finding donors is always a challenge. Then, you head to these locations and if the dodgy water doesn’t kill you, the men walking around with rifles could. It’s unsafe, at times lonely and heartbreaking. Not every trip is a success and sometimes the problems are only there because of the greed and power-hungry men in control. Why give the innocent and suffering more, because if they’re happy and content, it could take away their fear and obedience.
Yara is the daughter of a Rockstar and a former model. Her family has always tried to use their popularity for a good cause to help people in need. Yara is the pretty face of their foundation. She helps get the donations in and steps into the missions for a short time to promote the cause. In this case, once there, things go a wee bit off kilter when politics and alliances between governments put the peace talks on hold. Now, Yara is in danger, and the man protecting her turns out to be one of the ones who put her in danger.
Kade Spear works for his government. The only problem is, his government doesn’t seem to be working with or for the right people or for the right reasons. The mission he was sent over for seems to be hitting roadblocks of the Rebel, Al Qaeda…baddies kind. In all this political nightmare, there’s a beautiful little Tinker Bell who is slowly cracking the shell around his heart. He will do ANYTHING to protect her, even go against what his CIA handler tells him to do.
Honestly, I think this was Victoria Paige’s best work. I couldn’t stop reading and every time I had to, I was desperate to get back. It’s obvious this author does a lot of research because she’s completely convinced me that she’s travelled the world on aid missions and was writing from experience. It’s the little details that she manages to seamlessly add into her stories that I enjoy. What people eat, where and how they act is just part of the story. Not added to teach a lesson, just to set the scene and make it easier for me to see.
The Princess and the Mercenary was very entertaining. I laughed at Yara’s snarky attitude, sniffled reading about Kade’s horrible past and sighed as he shared his developing feelings for Yara. It was sexy too. Nothing wrong with a wee bit of wall action to get the heart pumping. 😉
If you’re looking for a story to get your mind whirling, heart pumping and spine-tingling, I highly recommend giving The Princess and the Mercenary a try.
