I liked the idea of a king adopting nine babies and raising them to be princesses. I haven't seen that done before, at least that I can remember. All of them are named in this book, though only a few actually end up being introduced to us with enough personality to be considered characters. Partly because the book is short, and partly because most of the plot centers on Maelyn.
I also liked that the author plans on writing a book about each princess. So we'll get to know the others in story lines tailored to them. Maelyn was easy to relate to. She's the eldest, in charge of her kingdom, and she takes care of her sisters. She's also a bookworm.
I liked the glimpses we got of Willow, I hope we get to hear more about him in other books, even if the stories will center around the other princesses instead of Maelyn.
I didn't like how short the book was. Mostly because I wanted to read more! There was enough going on in the book, that it could have easily been stretched into a full-length novel. And had it done so, we might have gotten to know the other princesses a little bit, instead of just getting to know their names. There were a lot of loose threads, and the ending wasn't much of an ending. But I'm hoping that is because the next book in the series will be picking up where this one left off. Somehow.
I would recomend this book for anyone who likes princess stories, or fairytales. It had that fairytale feel to it.
