In Ohio in the mid-70s a young man was accused of rape and theft and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. When examined by psychologists he was found to be suffering from a multiple personality disorder and to have 24 quite distinct personalities, with different accents, different abilities, different brain wave patterns. Some of these personalities knew about each other, others didn't know that others existed - the core Billy was suffering from amnesia and had been "asleep" for several years. This sequel to "The Minds of Billy Milligan" deals with what happened after 1982, how Billy was transferred to different institutions, how he married and was cheated by his wife, how he led prison revolts, how he painted murals with secret messages.
