Mark Manson's Victory by Horatio Alger is one of the most popular novels written by the author. The story begins with the street scene where a father and his son, around fifteen, are leaving the hotel and walking along the street.

The boy, Edgar, seems to be quite intelligent in the very opening of the book. He wants to get his shoes polished and he asks his father about his permission. The father asks why the boy had not got his shoes polished in the hotel. The boy intelligently answers that they charged more there.

The opening scene of the story prepares the readers for the ensuing events and the emphatic opening shows many promises to com. The story unfolds in a slow progression, maintaining the element of interest.
