Agency nurse and physiotherapist Grace Gillespie is long overdue for a break. However, she finds herself unable to resist when she is offered work nursing a patient recovering from an accident, deputy Head of the local high school, Stuart Campbell. He lives near Dornoch, her home territory and birthplace. Grace looks forward to being close to family and on familiar ground; taking on the job seems a rather attractive prospect. But her patient's case is not as straightforward as it seems. Stuart insists that he cannot remember his accident; it is assumed that he must have fallen off the roof of the school during a function there. Grace has plenty of experience of this kind of accident and knows that her patient's injuries don't match up with this - what is he hiding? Who are his enemies? And why is he so afraid of being left alone in the house? Spurred by her growing attraction to her patient, Grace is determined to get answers to her questions. But as her investigations go on, it seems someone is desperate to stop her, no matter what it takes.
