Wow! This was so much more that I had hoped it would be. Nereid is an amazingly immersive, unique universe and after reading the first chapter I was completely hooked. The characters and story are so in depth and satisfying, I'm really looking forward to where Sophia Menesini takes us in the next book!

The candle sticks drip onto the short table by the fire, and the night fades into heated bliss.

The Veiled Threat is Menesini's debut novel, about Captain Shea Lara, leader of The Veiled Duchess, an elven pirate, she's looking for her final score before retiring.  After completing her former mentor's score of stealing a pearl, she is approached by  someone who's offering her the biggest score; a score that she absolutely cannot refuse, a score that'll help save her people and all she has to do is kidnap a queen. But things take a turn...

I don't want to spoil tooooo much, but there are so many layers/twists to this action-packed adventure and knowing there’s a lot more to come from just the epilogue is super exciting!
I highly recommend giving this one a read.

The Veiled Threat is the first book in the action-packed New Adult romantic fantasy series, The Veiled Duchess.

The story kicks off with The Veiled Duchess captain, Shea Lara, and her crew taking down an imperial navy ship. Straight into the pirate action, oh yeah! I was immediately captivated by captain Shae and her swashbuckling crew.

The POV swaps between two Characters – Captain Shae, a 23-yr-old red headed Elven beauty, a vixen and pirate supreme. – And Jo, Crown Princess Joana of Arethusa, a 25 yr-old blond bombshell who is much more than just a pretty face. We travel with Shea for the first six chapters, setting up plot lines and background. We then meet Joana (Jo) at chapter seven.

As the synopsis says Shae is offered a job with a pay day that she cannot refuse. A pay day that she could use to bring an end to the Elven slave trade.

The kidnapping goes off without a hitch, seeming too good to be true, but the kidnapping is only the begging of the adventures that Shae and Jo have. Double crosses, dirty dealings and insider Royal betrayal. Oh and there's the pesky little problem of Shae and Jo starting to fall in love with each other. The Veiled Duchess's captain and crew find not only trouble, but love and unlikely allies along the way.

This book is full of evil rulers, slavery, pirates, princesses, passion, power plays, mutiny, girl power and lady on lady love. And has an Epilogue so epic it that makes me not only want to read the next book, but NEEEEED to!

IMHO: the Veiled Threat

The Veiled Threat honestly reads like a mainstream harlequin romance but for women loving women in a fantasy setting. I didn't realize it wasn't traditionally published until I went looking for information on the sequel that I have a mighty need for. *cough* Anywho, here's the quick run down...

• Quickly sucked in, starts with the action of capturing a prized haul for our pirate crew


• Love this world building


• Long live the matriarchies!


• Love Shea's sister/auntie relationship with Aster


• Interesting having the elves as the enslaved and oppressed. Usually they're angelic and aristocratic.


• Sooooo many different kinds of women characters!


• The unexpected was really unexpected


• The romance is just adorable, and makes my queer heart beam with pride


• The job Shea accepted is wrapped up, but there's so much more brewing & a wicked queen to topple


• Needs the next one nOW!

 

Swashbuckling action across the land, with characters of all types, while two young women go from enemies to lovers. Way different take on elves and the  Greek/Roman pantheon.

I've been racking my brain for over a week now and can't come up with any direct comp titles. The closest is The Afterward, which is also amazing & easily recommendable as well for w/w fantasy fans. But there should be more! I needs more! Rec me some more w/w fantasy in the comments below, please!

Shea tucks a stray strand of vibrant red hair behind her pointed ear and laughs. “Maybe. But I’m the only one that’s grown into my ears!”

 

The Lycon Captain’s hat stays in the air a fraction of a second longer than the Pinnace as the lifeboat free falls to the Ocean’s surface and she can’t hold back her chuckle at the Lycons’ high pitched screams.

“Yeah well Pirates call that bullshit.”

 

If Jo didn’t find her so damn adorable, she’d almost be intimidating.

Everything is going to be fine, but Jo figures it might not be a bad idea to grab that sword from her quarters.
