Gilchrist is a down-and-out photographer in a department store portrait studio in Toronto, 1992. He has an estranged wife who thinks he's a bum, and a femme fatale girlfriend who won't be tamed. The story follows their brief romance through bars and parties, as well as his experiences with a dominatrix, a hostile Rastafarian, and a recently separated father with his own set of demons. They share a racist mindset and a paranoia of immigration, gay activism, radical feminism and multiculturalism, and have even more to talk about after the city's first race riot. When Gilchrist unexpectedly falls for a black woman with her own contentious notions about white folks, he is exposed to a culture of which he was relatively ignorant, and comes to reconsider a few of his hard-held beliefs. Ironically, he associates more with her people while his own friendships start to break down, but not before a startling encounter with his ex-girlfriend.
