The "La Vue / Le Texte" series brings together writers and artists from Europe and America who complement and illuminate each other's work. This series presents these collaborative efforts in two volumes, one by an artist and the other by a writer. Each participant uses his or her own medium to express a common interest. This novel by Paul Bowles is set, as are Miquel Barcelo's paintings, in a bleak and beautiful North African country. There, near a small town, in a grand house managed by Sekou, a formidable man of impenetrable courtesy, a young American artist and his sister arrive for a stay of several months; he to paint, she to rest. The grisly death of two American tourists who had insulted Sekou provokes, in the volatile sister, a cascading series of memories and fears and an inevitable confrontation with Sekou. Miquel Barcelo is one of Spain's leading young artists. He spends several months each year among the Dogon people in Mali. Paul Bowles, is an American novelist whose works include "The Sheltering Sky", recently made into a film, and many short stories. He lives in Morocco.
