This volume is an edition of an early version of Proust's "A l'ombre de jeunes filles en fleurs". It shows the evolution of the text from a basic typescript through various manuscript corrections and editions towards a version which would have been published in 1914, if war had not intervened. The stages of composition are differentiated by the use of distinctive typefaces. This is the first book-length study to examine a major section of Proust's novel in a forward-moving fashion, rather than working backwards from the final version. In the introduction, Richard Bales deals with the problems of Proust's manuscript. The text and editorial matter are in French.
