It is believed that the Italian folk tales were put down in writing from the Middle Ages, through the 1500s, 1600 and onwards. However the tradition of orally transmitting folk tales has been thousands of years old.
Many Italian tales are older than famous French ones. It is said that many of the French tales were borrowed from Italy. Even some of the Grimm tales stem from Italian sources.
