Harmful effects of radiation and the possible spread area of radioactive contaminants within the environment were brought to focus in recent years by a series of significant events involving nuclear safety. On the other hand, the use of radiation for treating cancer has widened to include more types of radiation and heavy ions to affect and improve results with radioprotective and radio-sensitizing compounds. Basic studies of DNA, whose genetic engineering stemmed from early photo-biological and radiobiological work on DNA damage and repair, have developed towards a fuller understanding of the events, progressing from DNA radiobiochemistry to genetic, immunological, physiological and systemic consequences. It is now clear that many of these events and results are interrelated.
