This report assesses whether the impact of self help could be increased by the encouragement of Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS). LETS, which enable groups of people to exchange skills and services using a local currency have grown rapidly in the last five years. 35,000 people are now members of schemes throughout the country. Whilst the impact of LETS on property renovation is currently small, the report's recommendations could be important for those involved in urban regeneration policy in government. Local authorities, voluntary organizations and LETS themselves will also find the report valuable in describing methods of encouraging self help, and targeting improvement efforts on those groups for whom do-it-yourself is not practicable.
